In her visits to Armenia and Azerbaijan, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini reiterated the importance of the Eastern Partnership countries for Europe. In Mogherini’s first visit to Armenia as EU foreign policy chief, she continued negotiations started in December on a new EU-Armenia agreement and spoke of the EU’s economic investment in the country. On Monday Mogherini was in Azerbaijan and highlighted the country’s key security role in the region and its potential to become one of the EU’s major commercial partners in the region. Azerbaijan is a strategic partner in terms of European energy security due to the Southern Gas Corridor and the EU is already Azerbaijan’s largest trade partner and main investors.
